Midwest ATC Receives FAA Exemption for Innovative Air Traffic Control Training Program

New program will address critical nationwide controller shortage

March 27, 2025 – Midwest Air Traffic Control (Midwest ATC) is proud to announce that it has been granted a special exemption by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement a groundbreaking training program for air traffic controllers. This exemption marks a significant milestone in the advancement of air traffic control education and safety while addressing the national controller shortage.

Midwest ATC is revolutionizing air traffic control training by partnering with a top-tier educational institution to develop the next generation of air traffic controllers. Candidates will earn a four-year degree featuring an Enhanced CTI program endorsement, ensuring they receive cutting-edge education in both air traffic control standards and the specialized demands of contract tower operations.

After university graduation, they will advance through a specialized certification program focusing on contract tower operations, refining their skills before beginning on-the-job training at their assigned Midwest ATC tower. This innovative approach is designed to produce the most highly qualified candidates, maximizing their chances of achieving full certification and seamlessly integrating them into the workforce.

Graduates will join the frontline of air traffic management, staffing over 100 FAA Contract Towers operated by Midwest ATC. FAA Contract Towers now represent 51% of all towers in the U.S. By increasing the pipeline of skilled controllers, this program directly addresses the critical shortage of air traffic controllers, ensuring the safety and efficiency of civilian, commercial, and military aviation for years to come.

“We are thrilled with the FAA’s decision to support our vision,” said Shane Cordes, CEO and President of Midwest ATC. “This exemption not only validates our innovative approach but also underscores the FAA’s commitment to fostering advancements in aviation safety and training. Our new program is designed to produce highly skilled air traffic controllers who are ready to meet the challenges of today’s air traffic demands.”

The new training program at Midwest ATC includes:

• Advanced Simulation Labs: State-of-the-art facilities that simulate real-time air traffic scenarios, allowing trainees to gain practical experience in a controlled environment.
• Classroom training: Advanced Local Area Knowledge training and testing for airports at which students will be assigned.
• Mentorship from Experienced Controllers: Direct guidance from seasoned professionals, ensuring that theoretical knowledge is complemented by practical insights.

This exemption is expected to set a precedent for future training methodologies in the aviation sector, promoting a culture of innovation and excellence. Midwest ATC is committed to continuously improving its training programs to ensure the highest levels of safety and efficiency in air traffic management.
